I was browsing past blog entries from Sam Decker at http://decker.typepad.com/welcome/life/index.html and he was describing how sometimes fear can get the best of us. He explained how his father always quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain." It was a reminder that fear can hold us back in life. It can stop us from taking a risk and venturing outside our comfort zone. I personally know that if I had let fear get the best of me I would have never been able to accomplish as much as I have thus far.
I like Emerson's quote for the simply fact that it is true. If we do what we fear then it can only rid the fear of it, and it will build confidence that we overcame what we feared.
